1. Stay connected with your child. Ask how things are going, what is being taught, where there are challenges. The support this provides to a child is significant and boosts their confidence while reducing pressure.
Being a teacher can be a very rewarding job, but at the same time it is equally as difficult. With the added pressures of today’s generation, being a teacher is growing into a more and more complex job. It used to be that you could design a physics experiment about compression springs and have kids fill out a worksheet, but now there seems to be the need to use technology. A simple thing about extension springs turns into a complicated mess involving computers and gadgets. Some teachers do enjoy this, but it does add extra stress onto their plate. Administrators try very hard to keep up with technology and have their school be innovative, but there are ways to do this and not to do this.
Beyond a certain level, all parents may not be able to help their children with curricular work. This is specially true for subjects such as Maths. But there are a number of things that you as a parent can do to help your child learn better and perform better. Here are 6 simple rules to follow:
Pre algebra is primarily the eighth or the ninth grade math. It includes whole numbers arithmetic, integers, decimals, negative numbers and various fractions. Square roots and exponents are some other essential algebra components. It is very crucial that you build up a great foundation by mastering pre algebraic concepts. This will assist you in learning to manipulate various algebraic equations later in life.
2. They allow practiced mistakes to happen and don’t take time to fix them. While #1 was a little tongue-in-cheek, I am very serious about this one. Teachers seem to have forgotten the information about how many correct repetitions it takes to learn a fact (20 – 50 correct repetitions) and how many correct repetitions it takes to fix a mistake that has been practiced. Hundreds! Yes, I am serious!
3. Find the right tuition environment. Look for tutors or classes where the class size is small. Having 20 kids together is not conducive to individual attention. Ask for referrals and then talk to other parents. Ask to understand the teaching approach and how individual attention is provided.
