This happens every year. We get a brand new group of fresh, cheery faces, or we get high school students. (Just kidding. Don’t get mad.) For a while, we believe that all of our students have mastered everything they were taught in the previous grades.

2. They allow practiced mistakes to happen and don’t take time to fix them. While #1 was a little tongue-in-cheek, I am very serious about this one. Teachers seem to have forgotten the information about how many correct repetitions it takes to learn a fact (20 – 50 correct repetitions) and how many correct repetitions it takes to fix a mistake that has been practiced. Hundreds! Yes, I am serious!

5. Provide a disciplined learning environment at home. Ensure that certain times are strictly adhered to. Once a child gets used to a study routine, their overall stress reduces and regular study enhances their marks.

Being a teacher can be a very rewarding job, but at the same time it is equally as difficult. With the added pressures of today’s generation, being a teacher is growing into a more and more complex job. It used to be that you could design a physics experiment about compression springs and have kids fill out a worksheet, but now there seems to be the need to use technology. A simple thing about extension springs turns into a complicated mess involving computers and gadgets. Some teachers do enjoy this, but it does add extra stress onto their plate. Administrators try very hard to keep up with technology and have their school be innovative, but there are ways to do this and not to do this.

Students who are disconnected from the professor and from their fellow students are more likely to skip class, be disengaged when they are in class, and give lower evaluations at the end of class. They are less likely to learn and to contribute while in the classroom. Given this, it is worth spending 20” at the beginning of a new semester to have students up and moving about to begin to learn about their classmates and to also have the sense that interaction and engagement is to be expected in your course.

That first day of each new year is almost blissful…until we begin the first lesson (which is always review); and then the ”not-so-heavenly” chorus begins. ”I’ve never seen that.” ”My teacher never taught us that.” ”I don’t know how to do fractions.” ”I don’t know my multiplication tables.” Giggle.
